Music streaming payouts reached a substantial global scale in 2025, but the distribution of that money is changing as more independent artists, countries, and languages participate. Spotify paid more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025, while global recorded-music revenue reached $31.7 billion. The figures below show both the size of the market and the very different payout thresholds within it.

Global streaming payout scale and market mix
Streaming is the dominant part of recorded music. According to IFPI’s Global Music Report 2026, global recorded-music revenue reached $31.7 billion in 2025, a 6.4% increase from 2024. Streaming represented 69.6% of that revenue, while subscription streaming alone represented 52.4%. The same report counted 837 million users of subscription music accounts worldwide in 2025.
The previous year’s figures provide a useful measurement point. IFPI’s Global Music Report 2025 recorded $20.4 billion in global streaming revenue in 2024, equal to 69.0% of recorded-music revenue. These percentages describe the market’s revenue mix; they are not a universal per-stream price or a guaranteed artist take-home amount.
Spotify’s own 2025 figure was more than $11 billion paid to the music industry, up more than 10% year over year, according to Spotify’s 2025 Loud & Clear highlights. The payment figure is for the music industry, so it should not be read as the net amount received by every artist after labels, publishers, distributors, managers, and other contractual participants.
| Measurement | Period | Reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| Global recorded-music revenue | 2025 | $31.7 billion |
| Global streaming share of recorded-music revenue | 2025 | 69.6% |
| Subscription streaming share | 2025 | 52.4% |
| Subscription music-account users worldwide | 2025 | 837 million |
| Global streaming revenue | 2024 | $20.4 billion |
| Spotify payments to the music industry | 2025 | More than $11 billion |
Digital royalties also extend beyond interactive streaming. SoundExchange’s 2024 Annual Report reported more than $11 billion in cumulative digital royalties distributed by 2024. Because this is a cumulative distribution figure, it is not directly comparable with a single year’s Spotify payment.
Spotify artist royalty thresholds
Spotify’s artist distribution statistics show a wide range of earning levels. More than 13,800 artists generated at least $100,000 from Spotify alone in 2025, and more than 1,500 generated over $1 million. At the very top, the 80 highest-earning artists each generated more than $10 million annually.
The lower end of the measured distribution has also moved upward. The 100,000th-highest-earning artist generated more than $7,300 from Spotify in 2025, compared with about $350 for the 100,000th-ranked artist in 2015. These are Spotify-reported thresholds for the specified rank and year; they do not establish that every artist receives the same amount per stream.
Spotify’s 2024 figures add another benchmark. The 10,000th-ranked artist increased from $34,000 in royalties in 2014 to $131,000 in 2024, according to Spotify’s European artist data release. In 2024, an artist receiving one in every million Spotify streams generated more than $10,000 on average. Spotify also counted 12,500 artists generating more than $100,000 in royalties that year.
The distribution is not limited to artists who were already established. Nearly one-quarter of those 12,500 artists above $100,000 in 2024 had not been releasing music professionally five years earlier. More than 80% of Spotify’s top royalty-generating artists were not featured in the Global Daily Top 50 in 2024. That distinction separates royalty distribution from a simple chart-ranking snapshot.
Independent and DIY payout distribution
Independent music is a major part of the payout picture. Independent artists and labels accounted for about half of Spotify royalties in 2025, according to Spotify’s 2025 Loud & Clear highlights. Spotify also reported that more than one-third of artists generating at least $10,000 were DIY or had started that way.
Longevity appears in the reported DIY distribution. More than 90% of DIY royalties on Spotify in 2025 went to artists who had been releasing music for more than one year. This statistic describes the share of DIY royalties associated with that group; it does not say that an artist must release for a particular length of time to earn royalties.
Discovery pathways also show measurable scale. More than 1,600 artists first playlisted in Spotify’s Fresh Finds ecosystem later built six-figure Spotify careers. The figure covers artists whose later Spotify careers reached six figures, not a forecast for every artist entering a playlist.
Spotify reported that independent artists and labels generated more than $5 billion from the platform in 2024. Regional results show similar weight for independent acts: more than half of royalty revenue in Germany went to independent acts in 2024, while indie artists and labels made up around 40% of Canadian Spotify royalties in the same year.
Cross-border and language distribution
Streaming payouts increasingly cross national borders. On average, artists had more than half of their Spotify royalties coming from outside their home country two years after debuting in 2025, according to Spotify’s 2025 Loud & Clear highlights. Artists generating more than $500,000 in Spotify royalties represented 75 countries in 2025, compared with 66 countries in 2024. Artists from more than 150 countries generated at least $10,000 on Spotify in 2025.
Language diversity is visible in discovery as well as payouts. Songs in 16 languages reached Spotify’s Global Top 50 in 2025. Among Spotify genres generating more than $50 million in 2025, Brazilian funk royalties grew 36%, K-pop royalties grew 31%, Latin trap royalties grew 29%, Latin urban royalties grew 27%, and reggaeton royalties grew 24%.
These percentages are growth rates for the named genres and period, not shares of total Spotify royalties. They indicate where selected large-scale genre pools grew, while the country and language figures indicate how widely streaming activity and earning opportunities were distributed.
European streaming payouts
European artists earned €1.7 billion in Spotify royalties in 2024, up 15% year over year, according to Spotify’s European artist data. Spotify’s European artist royalties in 2024 were nearly twice the 2020 level. The platform had 100 million paying subscribers across Europe in 2024, and European artists generated 28 billion global discoveries.
The European distribution includes both audience activity and artist thresholds. European listeners streamed EU artists 351.66 billion times in 2024. More than 52,000 EU artists landed on Spotify editorial playlists, up 4% from 2023. More than 17,000 EU artists earned over €10,000 from Spotify, while more than 27,000 earned over €5,000.
EU artists received nearly 44% of all Spotify royalties generated in the EU in 2024. Artists performing in non-English languages received 57% of Spotify royalties generated in the EU. Those figures concern the EU market and its artists; they should not be generalized to the global platform.
Other European indicators show how distribution is changing over time. Streams of female EU artists rose 83% globally and 81% across Europe from 2020 to 2024. European music exports grew by an average of 32% annually from 2014 to 2024. Both are historical growth measures for the stated periods, not forecasts of future growth.
Canadian and U.S. payout distributions
Canada provides a clear example of cross-border streaming. Canadian artists earned nearly C$460 million in Spotify royalties in 2024, up 5% year over year, according to Spotify’s Canadian artist report. A striking 92% of Canadian artists’ Spotify royalties came from listeners outside Canada in 2024. Canadian artists’ music was streamed for 15 million hours per day on Spotify worldwide, and French-language Spotify royalties for Canadian artists grew 15% globally.
The same report stated that audio streaming accounted for nearly 79% of Canada’s C$909 million recorded-music revenue in 2024. This is a national recorded-music mix statistic, while the C$460 million figure is Spotify royalties for Canadian artists; the measures have different scopes.
Spotify’s 2025 Canadian figures show higher thresholds. Canadian artists generated more than C$544 million in Spotify royalties, up 19% year over year, according to Spotify’s 2025 Canadian Loud & Clear report. More than 370 Canadian artists generated over C$100,000 from Spotify alone, more than 100 surpassed C$500,000, and nearly 70 generated over C$1 million.
The United States remains another large streaming market. The RIAA 2024 Year-End Revenue Report reported U.S. total streaming revenue of $14,877.7 million in 2024, up 3.6% from 2023. Within that total, U.S. paid-subscription streaming revenue was $10,687.0 million, up 5.3% from 2023. These are U.S. market revenues, not artist-level Spotify payouts.
